‘The Cathedral’, as christened by motorcycle fans, was built in 1955 and initially ran to a length of 4.788 miles. The current track has a length of 2.830 miles and includes a mixture of super fast flat-out and slow corners. The curves in Assen were traditionally banked and the surface is extremely grippy, enabling motorcyclists to ride much faster on the course than at other circuits. Today these heavily cambered bends have been modified due to safety issues.
